Due to the lack of studio access during the many lockdowns, we took it upon ourselves to find innovative ways to continue making art from home. Our propositioned monthly exhibitions were entitled All the World’s a Stage, and New BeginningsAll the World’s a Stage drew influence from the Shakespeare quotation “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players”. We found this line poignant to the concepts which underpin displaced studios principles; that being, the creation of digital spaces which become physical within our minds and computers, allowing transportation of ourselves and others to imagined realms. For this exhibition, the three of us worked on individual films taking inspiration from themes of the stage. This came together into a film journeying through each of our individual practices, with themes ranging from the performative nature of gender to the ethereal stage of the mind. During the Spring, when the lockdowns were beginning to ease, we decided on the next theme New Beginnings. This exhibition was borne out of the serendipitous meteorological optimism of Spring, with the promise of imminent freedom from lockdowns. For this exhibition, we decided to invite our fellow peers to collaborate on an exhibition which included a digital showcase of the work created by ourselves, alongside 6 guest artists; Mia Dove, Sara Armstrong, Melissa Little, Katy Gusterson, Charlotte Franklin and Hannah Geary. Each artist took their own unique take on the theme, all given the instructions to include the outdoors within their work. This manifested itself both thematically as well as physically creating artwork outside (safely); to symbolise the optimism for a return to nature, which had been so suddenly ripped from us because of the pandemic. Even though disPLACEd studios was initially borne out of the pandemic, it is something we plan to continue into the future, and we will continue to work out new and exciting ways to allow us to reap the benefits of collaboration!

disPLACEd studios is an art collective made up of artists Rhiannon Dunn, Imogen Andrews and Sophie Smith. The lack of studio access we experienced as a result of the pandemic, fuelled us to work on innovative ways to continue our practices from home, resulting in monthly digital exhibitions.
