The work of Cypriot artist Stylianos Maratheftis is on a specific conflict of the 21st century, the issues of immigration and refugee crisis. He comes from a country that was divided by two in 1974 and a lot of people had to leave their houses to save their lives. From a young age he was listening to stories from his grandparents and father about their experiences through that time. Since then, the artist focused his practice on the refugee crisis. Through his art he was to bring awareness and sensitize people about what is going around the world and on his own way to tell different stories from refugees. In his paintings, he is using more outlined figures and plays with the colour meaning. He is using the colours to bring in the emotion to his painting but also his personal experiences from his family by using in some of his artworks their belongings.

β€œTo be called a refugee is the opposite of an insult; it is a badge of strength, courage, and victory.”
