Viral phenomena are objects or patterns that are able to replicate themselves or convert other objects into copies of themselves when these objects are exposed to them. …

This project led by Stephen Hughes introduced students to a sustainable process of making sculpture from home on a shoestring budget, using only recycled paper and a few items available at the supermarket. Together they made individual sculptures that we hoped would form an installation that visualises the Covid-19 virus.

As we remain in Covid induced isolation, we have become hyperaware of what is around us, the air we breathe our voices, our pathogens, the entanglement of our bodies within the spaces they inhabit. This project focused on the spherical bubble, a form that encapsulates a space otherwise unseen, that marks out an interior and exterior, the public and the private and the visible and the invisible.
