My practice acts as a representation of mind and thought, specific to the expression of aspects of my own identity. This third-year project, ‘I Don’t Burn’ explores how race intersects with appearance and this collective impact on one’s sense of self. The aim of which was to scrutinise my feelings around my racial identity through my processes of making. Writing has become a primary form of inspiration within my practice and has fed into my physical pieces in terms of providing deeper meanings and origins to each work. Acting as the backbone of the work, the poem (of the same title) was written as a manifestation of feeling at odds with my race growing up and the perpetuation of this into my adult life. In two significant parts, the first (film-based), navigates the ideas expressed in the poem through the vessel of a wearable piece (dress) and its interaction with childhood footage and imagery. The second aspect is a development of the first. The interdisciplinary nature of the practice has allowed for the physicality of the work to continue to change, in this case with the narratives of the writing being transferred to a material book made from the dress. The artist book that follows, acts as a collective archive that acknowledges the narratives that existed in the poem that were then translated into a wearable object. Interaction between mediums fuel the themes of ambiguity, confusion, and self-assessment that I aim to curate within the scope of my work.

Lost, between.

I am searching for home.

The feeling of which is what I strive towards, and am not yet able to curate myself.

I will keep looking.
