The Silk Road is the main source of inspiration for my design. I am amazed by the fusion of language and art. My project’s visual practices are mainly on porcelain and patterns. Porcelain has been traded as a representative commodity of the East and has had an impact on the porcelain art of different nationalities. The changing natural landscapes of the Silk Road such as mountains, valleys and waters was my inspiration for the shape of the porcelain and glazes. I also designed a series of patterns from porcelain glaze, for instance wrapping paper and napkins. These were based on the stone Lapis Lazuli, particularly its famous blue colour. This beautiful precious stone mainly produced in Afghanistan during the Silk Road period of trade exchange also had an impact on the artistic development of different cultures, such as the blue colour exclusively used for St Mary’s clothes in religious painting in the west.
