In my major project, the Kowloon Walled City which is called the ‘city of darkness’ in Hong Kong gave me the initial inspiration. This is the most densely populated area in the world in the 20th century. People here lived in dark corners forgotten by the city and lead poor but happy life. This phenomenon formed a strong contrast with the highly developed international city of Hong Kong. Although this place has been demolished, technological innovation and rapid development have largely led to a historic increase in income and wealth inequality. The contradiction between ‘high-tech’ and ‘low life’ still exists in every corner of this world. It brought me to a dystopian art form that expresses ‘high technology, low life’-cyberpunk. The kind of intense conflict also reminds me of deep-sea creatures that glow with vitality in the dark deep ocean, just like underclass people who have been forgotten in the corners of high-tech cities but have strong lives. The special shape of deep-sea creatures gave me a reference for the silhouette. In my major project, I tried to use the language of fashion design to express the vitality of being neglected under the pressure of high-tech modern life, but still strong to survive, to arouse people’s attention and concern for the disadvantaged groups, and to discuss ‘how to narrow the gap between rich and poor is an eternal social topic.
