In your dreams is a collection that brought my dreams and fantasy world into reality.
Inspiration comes to me from walks in nature, the dark history of fairies to cult film the Virgin Suicides and Goblin Market a Victorian poem. Even the Rat from Fantastic Mr Fox had a big impact on my knitwear.
Craft is a big part of my practise. Everything is hand crafted from the screen-printed fabrics, embossed leather, crochet lace, domestic knits, etc. I want the wearer to get a lot out of their pieces wanting to touch and explore the depth of colours and contrasting fabrics as well as feeling supported and inspired by them.
Everything has a complex symbolic meaning but to name a few – thistles recorded in Flora Symbolica are symbols of independence, bravery, and strength. They are said to grown on the graves of people who were brave in their lives. Beetroots, from my Mum’s allotment, are exaggerated into hearts chosen as symbols of hope, growth, and self-love. Rabbits pop up throughout the work and inspired my brand name ‘ r a b b i t ’, originally a nickname to explain an energetic delicate personality I caricature myself into all the animals I create, while also seeing them as almost spirits offering guidance.
