Unconventional Cling Film
‘Unconventional Cling Film’ Collection is a series of furniture that focuses on domestic interior archetypes and ways in which utilitarian forms can be subverted to create new experiences and conversations within a domestic space.
By subtly subverting the utilitarian forms of a chair, the composition of the chairs around a dining table creates an imaginary context for a person to inhabit and creates a set of choices for an individual seeking to position themselves at the table.
A high back chair goes beyond what is ergonomically needed, its height and personality defining a space. The tall frame has a high sense of formality resonating with grand buildings such as churches and cathedrals. A small stubby chair, by contrast, welcomes you to sit for a short time to rest, but perhaps not for long. A long seated chair greedily takes up far more space than it needs, whilst an unassuming stool invites you to sit informally.
By taking the dining chair archetype and exaggerating certain aspects, be it vertically or horizontally, one moves the sense of the chair beyond merely resting in a comfortable position.
The use of cling film as a key element of the design materials demonstrates its function outside of its usual role in a domestic space where its commonly perceived use is to cover food, however, the properties of cling film allow for a much wider application.
The properties of the high elasticity, adhesion, and translucence make cling film an intriguing material for creating three-dimensional frameworks. The chairs in this collection do not require any adhesive, jointing, or fixings and are only bound together with cling film. The netted webbing across the chairs is also solely cling film.
