Finding the value and relevance of folklore in contemporary English society. I began with a definition as I found that many people were interested in the subject but knew little about it and in the dictionary it is described as ‘the traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community, passed through the generations by word of mouth’. I have investigated its impact through changing oral culture, sense of place identity, tourism, story re-interpretations, artefacts, illustrations, music and special occasions. My final outcome focuses on the recurring theme of bringing people together through May Day.
Folklore celebrates the best in people; a combination of our values, efforts, culture and imagination. Most of all these stories and celebrations bring us closer together as families, friends and regional communities.
