During the 2020-2021 academic year, Unit VI have studied the narrative of tradition in architecture. I interpret tradition to have two meanings in the context of architectural design:
1) Linguistic traditions – traditions and canon which arise through an established architectural style or movement;
2) Traditions in construction – the idea that cultures and communities have inherited and developed certain traditional construction methods; this could be in through the use of specific materials or could refer to particular building techniques associated with a certain time and place.

My design proposal attempts to realise tradition both in terms of construction and linguistics; in-depth studies into the Classical language of architecture and tectonic traditions in construction jointly inform a scheme for a new building at Penn Croft Winery, home to Itasca Wines Ltd. – a newly established business near Crondall, Hampshire. The proposed development will act to transform Penn Croft Winery from a purely agricultural complex into a commercial hub for the company, designed to accommodate visitors and to provide them with an involved experience in Itasca’s operation as a sustainable, yet traditional, English winery.

I crave for soft thick noiseless walls of hand-made brick and lime, the deep light reflecting reveals…. The waste of space, which unwittingly creates that most valuable asset, a gain of space.
