This body of work explores the personal memories and subcultures that I have both participated in and observed externally in my youth. These paintings are snapshots of those memories, which aims to evoke a feeling of nostalgia within the viewer. The use of loose brushstrokes, a limited palette, and thin watery layers all aid in the attempt to recreate the swift nature of flashbacks and thoughts within the mind. The imagery used is particular to my own personal life and the generation to which I belong to, whose formative years were shaped by the emergence of the internet. References are made to popular culture that had emerged from niche pockets on the Internet. It is through online forums and video games, that allowed participants to share experiences regardless of where they lived in the world. Thus, creating a bond and relatability despite each individual’s upbringing and circumstances.
