Josephine Owen is a multidisciplinary communication designer who values research and materials to story tell. Her personal work is diverse and experimental, ranging from themes of memory and childhood in a ceramic medium, to playful depictions of monsters for a recent children’s book. Josephine is one half of design studio The Knot alongside co-founder Megan Willett. Here, the two tackle socially engaged projects that aim to educate and connect communities.

The direction and tone of the storytelling found in Josephine’s practice is often driven by the testing of materials. From a young age, her fascination with theatre and performance has inspired her use of objects, space and people to communicate complex ideas. An example of this can be seen in a recent project, where she worked to create the advertising and brand identity for ‘Groudmarks’. This challenging collaboration was with contemporary dancer and producer Hannah Wallace, the project’s aim was to reconnect people with nature through their physical being, space, drawings, sound and dance.

Throughout her time at Kingston School of Art, she has established a strong visual identity as a painter and 3D artist, however she has also developed a love for collaboration. Always searching for her next challenge, Josephine thrives on working with a diverse team to expand her skill set and learn new and exciting ways to storytell in the future.

I am a multidisciplinary communicator and storyteller. With a love for theatre, interactive experience and materials my practice focuses on teaching others a story.
