My work is a series of digital photomontage pieces and spoken word poems. I started my work with a research project in Barcelona which I linked to research I undertook in London and Manchester. I looked at the correlation between stop and searches and police harassment, in the uk and Spain, with the newly legalised marujuana laws in Barcelona and how this may decrease racial profiling. My photomontage images slowly went from a more cartoon like graphic image to more realistic photographic images which question the reality of its own authenticity. The general context of all my work touches on social injustice. It mainly focuses on police harassment and government neglect on ethnic minorities and people who come from a working class or lower class background. The reason my work doesn’t just solely focus on race is because the Uk has greater class discrimination than racism yet this is usually overlooked and because of this it is hard to make a change. Everyones focused on just racism when the real issue behind it is money, power and the distribution of wealth. However due to the lack of generational wealth there aren’t many black people in the upper class demographic therefore sometimes the class discrimination and racism just gets entangled into one. When this then happens its easy to make the choose the wrong solutions for our problems.
