Gurli is a modern woman’s uniform. The collection is sporty cut with women’s uniforms to create a fun modern silhouette. Named after my great-grandma, my final project pays homage to 3 generations of nurses in my family. Visual and mood inspiration came from my mum’s teenage scrapbook c. 1990s and my grandpa’s extensive photo. albums (1919-2013). Anne Hollander describes ‘a standard masculine civil costume’ The suit is the formal standard – male as it originated – she deduces that women’s fashion hasn’t reached true modernity. Uniforms were designed as a means to demarcate trades; this practice is thought to be as old as the trades themselves. But in a post-modern era they mean something different. – classic cuts, timeless and clean reflect modern democratic fashion. The advent of sportswear in the 1920s (when my great grandma was nursing post influenza epidemic) is reflected in elevated sportswear references, layering, cut outs and light fabric weights. This collection is for the club, work desk, and sportsfield.
