Akis
“Akis” means reflection in old Turkish.
Akis and mini-Akis lighting collection create reflections thanks to the sequin fabric used in the design.
Akis intended purpose is to provide people with an opportunity of experiencing reflection through interaction with the light and the material.
Unlike the Akis, the mini-Akis is designed for home use as a relaxing object. It is a supporting element for home ambience and arouses a feeling in user as if he or she was to looks at the stars.
The Akis and the mini-Akis projects were supported by Tepta Lighting.
Tepta Lighting also purchased my home-type mini-Akis design.
The starting point of Akis is a story in Mevlana’s Mesnevi on the subject of “reflection”. This story, which I came across just in time, clarified my perception on reflection. Namely, there are two foci in reflection, reflected and reflective. As a result of the reflection, the harmony of these two focuses creates the actual reflection, which is more beautiful than its constituents.
The significant question for my product is how light, and material interacts in space. I wanted users to provide the light which will be reflected for user interaction, by this way, they became a part of this work. However, just like the Anatolia painters, the reflector had to be correctly processed and prepared for reflection to reveal beauty. Just as the Anatolian Sufis regulate their souls, the material in the product also serves this purpose. Moreover, the design reminds us of the stars that we cannot see due to light pollution.
