Jigsaw Stools

The aim of my project was to produce a series of objects that can be equally viewed as unique individuals or as an integral part of the whole group.

Starting from a single block of polystyrene, the stools are cut free hand using a hot wire cutter. The nature of this cutting means that each stool is completely unique and celebrates the character of each person that cuts a stool. As each stool comes from the same block they all fit together in the unique order they are cut and this makes the act of stacking them like solving a jigsaw puzzle, relying on collaboration between individuals.

The personality of each piece is the thing that unites them, just like in a group of people.

How does an individual retain their identity whilst also conforming to a group?
