Charlotte Wood is an experimental animator and image creator based in London. Her work tends to lean towards themes of live music, the senses, memory, and occasionally current affairs. More often than not she’s exploring all of these things at once! She likes to take an unconventional documentary approach and often her films feature interviews which form the springboard for her image making. Charlotte enjoys turning her real-world inspirations into something surreal.
Her processes are greatly informed by her visual experimentations. She enjoys working with collage, archival material, photography and live action. She strives to explore how to piece these things together in the animation realm.
‘In the Moment’ is Charlotte’s graduate film. Inspired by her passion for live music and her dissertation research into the effects of the pandemic on the live music industry, ‘In the Moment’ explores the contrast between the sensory overload of the music venue environment and the lack of sensory involvement in online gigs. Nostalgic for a time not completely gone by, ‘In the Moment’ utilises archival footage and imagery sourced from old music magazines to inject an uncanny air of faded familiarity.
‘Untold Tales’ explores a similar theme of memory and perhaps lays the foundations for ‘In the Moment’. Using the medium of Polaroid photographs, Charlotte explores the personal stories behind simple objects collected and treasured by music fans. ‘Saturation Point’ takes an alternate route entirely, using elaborate cakes baked and photographed by Charlotte to convey the shocking lack of action taken by the UK food industry to reduce sugar content.
‘INDIE LDN’ is Charlotte’s self-forged music blog which seeks to fill the gap between good music journalism and good design. Unearthing the best of independent music, the blog features artist interviews, live reviews and recommendations.
