My work focuses mainly on experimental thinking. I challenge myself with every project to interrogate a brief and think as conceptually as I can. I feel that this results in unique and inventive pieces of work.
The first project in my showreel comes from my chosen strand, M.O.E.T (Ministry Of Experimental Thinking). The brief asked that I change the public’s perception of the sea / the beach. I decided to create a beach chair that can be used for work purposes. Lock-down has driven people away from the beach and local businesses are struggling, with nearly 50% of the population working from home, Beach Desk intends to help bring traction back to Brighton and the local businesses located on the coast. Beach Desk incorporates the comfort and relaxation of sitting at the beach, with the productivity and components of an office desk. Beach Desk is for office workers that are used to a cramped office cubicle with no windows in sight and are ready to swap that for the freedom of the beach.
The next project is the publication of my dissertation. The title of the dissertation is ‘Sex sells’. Is the use of sexual imagery an effective method of advertising within the fragrance industry? I decided to publish my dissertation in a magazine form. However, instead of using typical magazine binding, I instead opted for dos-a-dos binding. This results in the user having to turn the magazine around to read the different arguments both for and against the use of sexual imagery.
The final project in my showreel explores my position on sustainability within graphic design. The brief required that I create a poster to do this. My poster was created using old t-shirts that I sewed together. This was because I wanted the poster to be multi-functional, as modularity in design is an effective way to be a sustainable graphic designer. The poster could be used as a picnic blanket, a bag, a tablecloth, or a blanket.
