My third year project was to create a public building within the city’s fabric in East London, Whitechapel. The area has been demolished during the Second World War, therefore I have been focusing on to create a mixed use community building that continues the infrastructure and the urban revolution of Whitechapel but it also breaks some rules and creates uniqueness within the area. Such as the heavy main exterior staircase that connects every floor together as well as the roof gardens. Moreover, emphasising the importance of green space created a relationship between the nearby park and my proposal. A stepped look has been given the opportunity to show each floor levels to the public as well as to place gardens on the flat roofs. The building has a wrapped around/enclosed courtyard with an auditorium staircase seating area. As entering, on ground level I have placed the reception area, auditorium and study space. On the floors above roof gardens, library, exhibition area and meeting rooms can be found. I have decided to use modified structural cavity wall using concrete, as concrete is the strongest material to carry the heavy weight coming from the roof gardens above. For the fabric using stone cladding as well as using different textured concrete and timber. Moreover, within the building visitors have three different views from different rooms these are: street view, courtyard view and city view. Altogether, I have not only wanted to create a mixed use community building but create my own bad language by giving distinctive futures to the building within the area, as well as to create a safe public realm for the community, which connects to nature, the street and the city.
