Aasiya is a fashion designer with a keen interest in psychology and areas related to philosophy and thought. As a result, one of her major areas of interest in fashion is understanding how fashion design and art can come together to communicate thought, and affect what and how people think and perceive. She takes inspiration from the workings of the human mind—how it feels, thinks and behaves. She believes that fashion, similar to other art and design mediums, has the power to express and translate ideas and information into concepts, and then eventually clothes, that can help us understand and accept ourselves as well as other people better.

With roots in self-reflection, her projects put strong emphasis on the concepts and thought process being communicated. The concept of the projects originates from topics such as identity, perception, self-expression, circumstances of discomfort, disorientation and turmoil. The essence of the projects comprises evident melancholic undertones and traces of angst. These themes can be found represented through layering, both physical and metaphorical as well as asymmetry, materialising into, more often than not, dark colour palettes and unusual & structured silhouettes. Her evolving software skills currently include Adobe softwares like Photoshop and Illustrator and Clo 3D as well as apps such as Procreate and Adobe Fresco. Her strengths lie in research and context building. Visual research and exploration has also developed as one of her strong points in the design process, especially since the Major Design Project, leading her to be able to create and compose more conceptual and unconventional silhouettes.

“Though I am often in the depths of misery,
There is still calmness, pure harmony, and music inside me.”

Vincent van Gogh
